The Bresaola della Valtellina PGI sector, supported by its 14 producers, reported a strong performance in 2024, surpassing 12,600 tonnes in production—a 6.52% increase from the previous year. This marks a return to pre-COVID levels, with total consumption valued at €480 million (+6.52%).
Exports are also showing positive momentum, representing 5% of total production and valued at €14 million (+4.64%). In 2024, 632 tonnes of Bresaola della Valtellina PGI were exported, with the EU accounting for 72% of the total (+3.2% year-on-year), followed by non-EU markets at 28%, particularly in the Middle East (+8.5%).
However, beneath these encouraging figures, concerns are rising among producers. The availability of European raw material has sharply declined, dropping from 30% in 2023 to just 22% in 2024, with further reductions expected in 2025. As a result, producers are increasingly turning to non-European imports, which are subject to significant tariff barriers that could push raw material costs up by as much as 50%. This poses a serious challenge for a sector that requires over 34,000 tonnes of beef cuts annually.
Mario Francesco Moro, President of the Consortium for the Protection of Bresaola della Valtellina PGI, noted: “While the positive results are encouraging, the ongoing rise in raw material costs, compounded by tariff barriers, forces us to reassess the risks facing the sector. The escalating production costs are no longer sustainable for producers alone.”
The Consortium is calling for a coordinated response from all stakeholders in the supply chain, as well as from policymakers, to safeguard a vital industry for the Valtellina region and Italy as a whole.
