Salinas Valley study flags ongoing risks; FDA warns egg farms over Salmonella

It’s Monday, March 9, 2026. Today’s FSN Daily starts the week with new reporting on agricultural food safety, regulatory enforcement, and global surveillance of foodborne illness.

From an in-depth look at food safety in California’s Salinas Valley to new fraud alerts across Europe, FDA warning letters tied to Salmonella risks at egg farms, and outbreak data from New Zealand, here are the developments shaping food safety oversight around the world.

1. 5-year study reveals aspects of food safety in California’s Salad Bowl

By Ilana Korchia

California’s Central Coast produces a massive share of the fresh vegetables eaten across the United States. At the heart of this region lies the Salinas Valley, a 90-mile-long coastal valley south of Monterey widely known as the ‘Salad Bowl of the World.’ The valley alone produces roughly half of the nation’s lettuce – including iceberg, leaf, and romaine – along with vast quantities of broccoli, spinach, strawberries, and hundreds of other crops that feed the country year-round.

2. Europe records varied fraud reports in early 2026

The first report for 2026 on suspected frauds in Europe has highlighted issues ranging from olive oil adulteration to products with added water.

There were 189 reports in January 2026, 196 in December 2025 and 194 in November. Earlier data for 2025 shows 223 notices in October, 164 in September, 166 in August, 136 in July, 164 in June and 129 in May.

3. FDA warns Arkansas and Colorado egg farms about Salmonella findings and missing prevention plans

The FDA has issued warning letters to two shell egg operations, Black Sheep Egg Company LLC in Arkansas and John Yoder Farm in Colorado, for serious violations related to Salmonella contamination risks and noncompliance with the Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation. The violations, identified during 2025 inspections, raise concerns about insanitary conditions, pathogen harborage, and inadequate controls that could make shell eggs injurious to health.

4. Norovirus dominates outbreaks in New Zealand

The latest figures on foodborne illness in New Zealand show norovirus as the main cause of outbreaks and Campylobacter as the leading source of infections.

In 2024, there were 39 outbreaks reported in EpiSurv, the national public health surveillance database, with 920 patients. Ten outbreaks with 563 patients were caused by norovirus. A sick food handler was the possible source in two outbreaks, and one was caused by oysters. The pathogen was not identified in 13 outbreaks.
