In New York a group of Italians who in life does anything else – who works in events, who in research, who in the company – brings on stage a theatrical show in Italian language. It is called “Le Relations” and is the first project of Italian Stage Collective, an initiative founded by Ivana Di Giacomo and Ilaria Ceglia.
Giacomo deals with travel management and organization of international events; Ceglia is neuroscientist and Senior Program Manager at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The theatre, for both, is not a job but a parallel vent valve that, now, can also do good to the community. “Le Relations” comes from there: from the idea of building an expressive space outside the professional paths, but with a defined structure and an organized production.
The show is built for paintings and puts in line short scenes that tell recognizable situations: relationships of couple, family relationships, generational differences, moments of daily friction. The initial reference is the musical “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”, already adapted in Italy, but the bond is only spiritual. The texts were rewritten almost entirely by Di Giacomo and Ceglia, with the only exception of the monologue on immigrants, written and interpreted by Barbara Guardigli. The system is therefore original and extends beyond the sentimental theme, including a wider range of relationships.
The cast follows the same logic as the project: no one is a professional actor. On stage, together with the creators, there are Carlotta Jarach, Dario Sirabella, Mara Clemente, Barbara Guardigli, Daniela Ronchi, Sergio Castellari, Giusy Speranza, Mari Carminati, Francesca Pisano and Carol Degetto. The work has developed over time as a laboratory, closer to a community practice than traditional production.
Next to the group, however, there are some professional figures that hold together the artistic part. The musical component is entrusted to the singer Amira Casetti, while the director is Vanessa Innocenti, actress and director who worked on the balance between the different recordings of the show. The vocal work was followed by Sandro Naglia, with a specific path on the interpretation of a non-professional cast.
The narrative structure is led by two narrators who connect the scenes through a symbolic device – a “book of life” – that holds together the different episodes. The songs, taken from a pop repertoire, intervene intermittently to scan the rhythm and amplify some passages.
The event, which will be held today 21 March from 7:30PM at the Lang Recital Hall in New York and which has already gone sold-out, also has a solidarity dimension and the proceeds of the tickets will be destined to the Grow Together Foundation, a foundation committed in two projects: the construction of an oratory and that of a structure for people without a residence.
