In New York, on 18 and 19 April, the Italian Symposium 2026 brought together Italian students abroad, professionals and institutional representatives around a question that goes through the present: what space can Italy have in a global order in transformation. The title, Italy Beyond Borders: the role of a nation in a changing world, already indicated the perimeter of the discussion.
The initiative was promoted by United Italian Societies, a non-profit association born in the United Kingdom and now widespread in several countries, with the aim of bringing together Italian students and professional communities outside the country. As explained Giulio Maria Bianco, Country manager USA: «The Italian Symposium is the flagship event of United Italian Societies», a reality that brings together over 10,000 Italian students abroad. “The purpose of Symposium is to provide a platform for dialogue between Italian students abroad and international Italian professionals”.
Over the course of the two days more than six panels, with over twenty guests, have dealt with themes such as global economy, energy, technological innovation and cultural soft power. An approach that reflects the basic idea of the event: observing the Italian presence in the world not as a single block, but as a network of skills distributed between different sectors.
The first panel, The New Global Order: Fragmentation, Competition, and Realignment, opened the reflection on the new global order with the Consul General of Italy in New York, Giuseppe Pastorelli.
A central point emerged in the first panel concerned the role of Italian communities abroad, considered as a network capable of connecting different countries even in moments of political tension. “What you do, as students and young people, is part of this process,” said the Consul, highlighting how relationships, skills and mobility contribute to defining the international presence of Italy.
Next to the first panel, the day of 18 April also included Italy in the Global Economy: Perspectives from Luxury & Hospitality, two moments dedicated to changing markets and the role of Italian companies in key sectors of the global economy.
The second day has expanded its comparison with other areas. Energy at a Crossroads: Geopolitics, Markets, and the Transition addressed the theme of energy transition and its geopolitical implications, while Innovation and Digital Power: Italy in the Global Tech Race focused on the role of emerging technologies and global competition in innovation. To close the program, Soft Power and Identity: The Role of Culture and Art in a New World has shifted attention to the value of culture and identity as instruments of international influence.
The transatlantic dimension has remained in the background of many interventions. The United States is one of Italy’s leading economic partners and a strategic interlocutor also on the technological and security level. Cooperation develops in areas ranging from space to cybersecurity, as well as in commerce and culture.
In the story of the organizers, Symposium was born precisely from the need to put these levels together. “We have dealt with issues such as finance, technology, energy, politics, art and culture,” said Bianco. “We hope that the event will help to provide a clearer view of the role of Italy in the contemporary world”.
The Italian Symposium 2026 has built a space for comparison. A place where Italy is observed from afar, but also redefined through the experiences of those who live and work outside its borders. In this sense, more than an event, it is an attempt to relate different perspectives, held together by the same basic question.
