The Embassy of Italy in the United States hosted yesterday the second “Dialogo Italia- USA on Reliable Technologies for Democracies”, organized in collaboration with the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy of Purdue University and the SERICS Foundation. A day of work for a comparison of global challenges related to the themes of technological reliability and digital security that brought together high Italian and American officials and qualified representatives of industry and academic world.
In his opening speech, the Ambassador of Italy in the United States, Marco Peronaci, noted that “no democracy can protect the technological future alone: acting together, trusted partners can reduce the risks arising from dangerous dependencies, strengthening our democracies. This meeting is an important opportunity to deepen the level of coordination between Italy and the United States, aligning our priorities.”.
The Ambassador then had a two-way conversation with Michael Kratsios, Director of the Office for Scientific and Technological Policies of the White House, during which he discussed how to advance the strategic partnership between Italy and the United States in the technology sector. Kratsios also presented the main action lines of the American Administration on reliable technologies.
Speakers attending the event include Darío Gil, Under Secretary for Science at the Department of Energy and Joseph Jewell, Assistant Secretary for the War for Science and Technology. On the Italian side, the Hon. Giorgio Mulè, Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the Sen. Mariastella Gelmini, President of the Italian-US Friendship Group. There were in Washington the Amb. Armando Varricchio, Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Innovation and New Technologies, and Prof. Alessandro Armando, Director of SERICS, as well as Luca Nicoletti, Head of Service Industrial Programmes of the National Cybersecurity Agency. Roberto Viola, Director General for Communication Networks, Contents and Technologies at the European Commission, is also noted.
During the event, Prof. Roberto Baldoni, Counselor for Cybersecurity and Technology at the Embassy in Washington and Professor at the University La Sapienza in Rome, presented the “white paper” in his signature entitled “Technology must advance freedom: the Architecture of Reliable Technologies Diplomacy”, published by the Krach Institute. A document that emphasizes the importance of industrial cooperation between allies and the passage of emerging technologies from the laboratory to the market, within shared ecosystems.
The day ended with a new appointment of the “Villa Firenze Talks” series, hosted by Ambassador Peronaci at its Residence. After the intervention of Sean Cairncross, Director of National Cybersecurity of the United States, a conversation animated by Gianni Riotta, among the most authoritative voices of Italian journalism and Professor at Princeton University and LUISS, with Dario Gil, the Amb. Armando Varricchio and Keith Krach, President of the Krach Institute.
