Why you’ll love this easy breakfast smoothie!

If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll know how much i LOVE smoothies! Among my favorites, besides this one, are my strawberry banana smoothie and this kale smoothie.

Smoothies are overall just such a great breakfast option and something that we have in our house OFTEN. Especially during the summer when berries are ripe and inexpensive.

Why You’ll Love This:

5 simple ingredients, 5 minutes – nothing you have to hunt down at a specialty store.

Naturally sweet – no added sugars needed, the banana and blueberries do all the work.

Protein from the yogurt and peanut butter – so it actually keeps you full (not just a sugar rush that fades by 10am – its the perfect breakfast).

Endlessly customizable – swap the fruit, the milk, the nut butter, and it still works.

Ingredients needed

The ingredients for this recipe are listed fully down in the recipe card but let’s briefly go over the pantry staples needed including a few substitutions you can make as desired!

Frozen blueberries – we’re using 1 full cup of blueberries. Frozen berries give the smoothie that extra-thick, creamy texture. Fresh berries work too, but the smoothie won’t be quite as cold or thick.

Frozen banana – adds natural sweetness and creaminess. Sub in frozen cauliflower if you want the texture without the extra sugar (you genuinely can’t taste it).

Yogurt – I usually use vanilla greek yogurt or unsweetened greek yogurt but use any kind you have on hand! Dairy-free works great too.

Peanut butter – my favorite pairing with blueberries and banana, but any nut or seed butter works (such as almond butter or sunflower seed butter). Swap in powdered peanut butter to cut the fat if you want.

Liquid – I go back and forth between soy milk, coconut milk (coconut water is also great!), and regular milk depending on my mood. Use whatever you like to drink.

Easy optional add ins – flax seeds, spinach leaves, orange juice instead of milk, protein powder for a boost of protein, pure maple syrup for a touch of added sweetness, chia seeds, etc. It’s super customizable!

How to Make Banana Blueberry Smoothies

Just a reminder that you can find the FULL written blueberry smoothie recipe down in the recipe card, but I want to quickly go over how to make them with visuals for you 🙂

Load up the blender – Add your frozen blueberries, frozen banana, yogurt, peanut butter, and milk right into a high speed blender.

Blend until smooth – Blend until you get a thick, glossy, deep purple smoothie with zero chunks left. Store any leftovers in an airtight container.

Recipe Tip for the best blueberry smoothie

Freeze both fruits – for that thick, milkshake-like texture without watering it down with ice.

Add liquid last – or slowly, so you can control the final consistency instead of ending up with soup.

Boost it for a meal – throw in a handful of spinach or a scoop of protein powder if you’re drinking this instead of eating a full breakfast or lunch.

Taste before you sweeten – the banana and blueberries usually bring enough natural sweetness on their own. Also, if getting non-dairy milk, be sure it’s unsweetened, such as unsweetened almond milk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh blueberries and banana instead of frozen?

You can, but the smoothie won’t be as thick or cold. Frozen fruit is what gives this smoothie its milkshake-like texture, so if you use fresh fruit, plan on adding a couple of ice cubes to compensate.

Do I need the peanut butter?

Nope – it’s optional but highly recommended! It adds richness and a little staying power. Any nut or seed butter works if peanut isn’t your thing.

Can I freeze this smoothie?

Yes – pour it into a freezer-safe bag or container and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge for a few hours before blending it smooth again or letting it soften.
