The number of E. coli O157 cases has remained stable but non-O157 infections went up in England in 2025 compared to the year before.
Figures published by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also revealed a small outbreak caused by a strain of E. coli responsible for major incidents in previous years.
Overall, 2,457 cultured-confirmed Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections were reported in England in 2025. This decrease of 3.4 percent from 2,544 cases was partly due to an outbreak with nearly 300 illnesses that occurred in 2024.
