Miami company recalls sprouts in Florida, New Hampshire because of E. coli contamination

LEASA Industries Co. Inc. of Miami, FL, has recalled its alfalfa sprouts because of possible contamination with E. coli.

The recall was not posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s main recall page, but was posted on its enforcement report, which is relatively obscure and not widely available without a specific subscription.

According to the entry on the enforcement report, the recall involves more than 15,000 cups of alfalfa sprouts in 4-ounce and 6-ounce plastic containers. The 4-ounce containers were lot number H-0002-2027 and the 6-ounce containers were lot number H-0003-2027.

The recall report says the sprouts were grown with seeds that may have been contaminated with E. coli. The sprouts had expiration dates of 9/4/26, 9/8/26, 9/10/26, 9/15/26, 9/17/26 and 9/18/26. The sprouts were distributed in Florida and New Hampshire.

No press release was issued in relation to the recall, which was initiated on Sept. 4. The FDA did not classify the recall until Oct. 2.

The entry in the FDA’s enforcement report did not indicate whether the sprouts are involved in an ongoing outbreak that has sickened 76 people in 16 states. There have been several sprout recalls, as well as recalls of sprouting seeds, but the FDA has not named the seed supplier.
