Italian Tomatoes Taking Over the UK

Anicav, the Italian association of canned vegetable producers, will attend the Speciality & Fine Food Fair in London on 9–10 September as part of “EU Red Gold UK”, a programme co-funded by the European Union to promote Italian tomatoes in international markets.

The UK has become a crucial export destination for Italian tomatoes. It is now the second-largest market after Germany, worth about €400mn in 2024 and accounting for 13 per cent of sector exports by both volume and value. That represents annual growth of 3 per cent in value and 1.6 per cent in volume, underlining robust demand. The UK is also the leading market for Italian peeled and chopped tomatoes. “The UK remains a market of absolute importance for our exports,” said Giovanni De Angelis, Anicav’s director-general. “The Italian community, established here for more than a century, has helped spread our food culture. Today, Italian cuisine is among the most recognised in Britain, and tomatoes from Italy are increasingly common on British tables.”

Demand is strongest for peeled tomatoes, valued by UK buyers for quality and authenticity, De Angelis added. He described the EU-backed project as “a key instrument to support our producers abroad and strengthen competitiveness in a complex global market environment”.

The Speciality & Fine Food Fair is the UK’s leading trade event for premium food and drink, drawing thousands of buyers, importers, and distributors each year and providing an important platform for Italian food producers.
