Italian F&B Exports to USA Plunge, €600M Lost

Italian agri-food exports to the USA have stalled, losing around €600mn in value in the first seven months of 2025 compared with the same period last year, according to Italy’s farmers association Cia–Agricoltori Italiani. Istat figures confirm a deteriorating trend, with July marking the second consecutive monthly decline and a 10% year-on-year drop.

Cia described the reversal as “a bitter departure” from years of steady growth in US-bound sales. The slowdown began in April with growth of just 1%, slipping to 0.4% in May before turning negative in June (–3%) and deepening to –10% in July.

Cumulative growth between January and July slowed to 3%, far below the 19% recorded a year earlier. The shortfall amounts to roughly €600mn in lost value.

The trade balance also reflects the pressure on the sector. The surplus in July 2025 rose only 3% year on year, compared with a 28% jump in July 2024 — with the modest increase driven mainly by a sharper fall in imports than in exports.
