Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade returns to the East Village for the 35th edition

The iconic Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade was held on Sunday 19 October in the heart of East Village, one of the most anticipated events of the autumn New York season. Now in its 35th edition, the one that is defined to all effects “The Met Gala of the Canine Community” gathers every year hundreds of dogs, and their owners, in a competition of increasingly creative costumes.

This year the organization was curated by New York Dog Parade, a non-profit organization led by the journalist and columnist Fern Watt who relaunched the event along with a group of volunteers, and sponsored by the American brand of natural and organic foods for dogs and cats Stella & Chewy’s.

For the 2025 edition, Watt wanted to focus on three objectives: safety, authenticity and community participation. The route, as usual, unfolded in the Tompkins Square Park, and along Avenue B, where hundreds of spectators applauded the contestants.

Among the novelties of this year, the presence of four Grand Marshals, adoptable dogs from shelters such as Pup Starz Rescue, Social Tees and ASPCA, symbol of the social commitment that has always accompanied the event. On Sixth Street, between Avenue B and Avenue C, an activation block with free dog stand and snacks was also set up.

Over 300 dogs in costume took part in the parade, but only 20 arrived at the final of the contest. Among the most famous participants, Shirley Lee pushing “President Tofu” in his presidential stroller, and Ryan Howard with Pumpkin, dressed in perfect horror style. To win the first prize “Best in Show” was a trio formed by Charlie, Emily and Zoey, disguised as “Cereal Killer”, inspired by the famous cereal elves Kellogg’s Rice Krispies: Snap, Crackle and Pop. The group won a year of free dog food. The entire event was broadcast live on YouTube, allowing those who do not live in New York to participate virtually.

The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is a symbol of the East Village that is not just a show, but a true sense of community, with volunteers and residents actively participating, making this tradition become an opportunity to meet thousands of annual spectators.
