Why you’ll love this simple smoothie recipe

In college, I LOVED getting acai bowls from the local smoothie shop. Only problem was, they were SO expensive (especially for a college kid!). So, I learned to make them at home and have been doing so for the past 15 years! I started with homemade acai bowls but now mostly make it into a smoothie because I find it easier to drink. I know you’ll love this recipe!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Quick and easy: ready in about 5 minutes!

Naturally sweet: frozen banana and berries give it the perfect sweetness with no added sugar. But you can add a splash of maple syrup as desired.

Packed with antioxidants: acai berries are known for their nutrient density and immune support!

Customizable: easy to add protein powder, greens, or different fruits.

Great for breakfast or snacks: filling but still light and refreshing.

Main ingredients needed

The ingredients for this recipe are listed fully down in the recipe card but let’s briefly go over the pantry staples needed including a few substitutions you can make as desired!

Acai powder or puree – The star ingredient that gives this smoothie its deep berry flavor and antioxidant boost. I used to use açaí berries in their powder form that I got on Amazon but now, Acai packets are easy to find at Trader Joe’s or at your local grocery store in the freezer fruit section.

Frozen bananas – Adds natural sweetness and makes the smoothie creamy and thick! If using frozen berries, you could get away with using fresh bananas in this recipe.

Frozen mix of berries – Brings bright berry flavor and natural sweetness – I usually uses raspberries and strawberries but also really love cherries in this recipe. Honestly, any frozen fruit works!

Hemp seeds – Adds healthy fats, plant-based protein, and a subtle nutty flavor. Chia seeds would also be great!

Liquid of choice – Almond milk, regular milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or water all work well. I haven’t tried it but I think coconut water would be delicious in this recipe. Add more as needed to reach your desired consistency!

How to Make It

Just a reminder that you can find the FULL written recipe down in the recipe card, but I want to quickly go over how to make them with visuals for you 🙂

Add all of the ingredients to a high powered blender and blend until it reaches a creamy texture. Add a splash more liquid, as needed, to get the blender going. I like mine to be THICK so I add in as little as possible.

Recipe Tips

Use frozen fruit for the thickest smoothie texture!

Start with less liquid and add more slowly until it blends smoothly.

Add protein if desired: vanilla protein powder blends nicely with the berry flavor!

Turn it into an acai smoothie bowl: reduce the liquid and top with granola, coconut, and fresh fruit. SO GOOD!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is acai?

Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) is a small, dark purple berry that grows on acai palm trees in the Amazon rainforest. It’s known for its rich antioxidant content and slightly earthy, berry-like flavor that tastes similar to a mix of blackberries and dark chocolate – so good!
Because fresh acai berries spoil quickly, they’re most commonly sold as frozen acai puree packets or acai powder, which makes them easy to blend into smoothies and smoothie bowls.

What does acai taste like?

Acai has a rich berry flavor that’s often compared to a mix of blackberries and dark chocolate. It pairs especially well with bananas and strawberries.
