With the arrival of spring, New York City also changes the way to live the city. Between April and September, hundreds of roads are closed to traffic and transformed into temporary pedestrian areas to host district fairs and outdoor festivals. It is a model largely managed by the New York City Department of Transportation and the Street Activity Permit Office, which releases permits for public events and coordinate logistics with police and city services. In 2025 more than 300 street fairs had been authorized and the 2026 calendar moves on the same scale.
Street fairs are not all the same, and over the years a balance has been created between very standardized events – often managed by private promoters, with repetitive stalls and food “from fair” – and more identity events, linked to specific communities or neighborhoods. Known examples include the Feast of San Gennaro, which every September attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to Little Italy, or the West Indian American Day Carnival in Brooklyn, one of the most popular cultural events in the United States. Next to these, they proliferate weekly or monthly exhibitions along the arteries of Broadway, Fifth Avenue and Astoria, where they combine street food, handicrafts and live music, with a strong commercial component.
For the Italian public – resident or passing – these fairs also have a value of cultural orientation: they allow to read the city out of the most predictable tourist circuits, through its neighborhoods and its communities. It is no coincidence that many include stands dedicated to Italian or Italian American food, from fried pizza to zeps, often managed by families or historical activities of the diaspora. At the same time, the New York street fairs model influenced similar formats in Italy, especially in big cities.
