On October 16th marks a significant moment for Italian excellence in New York: Fiasconaro, the prestigious Sicilian artisan bakery house founded in Castelbuono in 1953, officially inaugurated its first flagship store in the United States at 422 West Broadway in the heart of SoHo.
“To us to be in New York today is, in some respects, a due act. For more than thirty years the made in Italy triumphs here, from the first panettoni arrived at the Fancy Food Show until today.” said Nicola Fiasconaro, “With this Fiasconaro flagship store we bring in the heart of SoHo our Sicily, with its colors, perfumes and harmonies that tell the Italian beauty. ”
An entrepreneurial path that brought three generations from a medieval village in the Madonie to 65 countries worldwide. Their panettone traveled into space with NASA, was served at the White House and offered as a gift to three Pontiffs. The collaboration with Dolce&Gabbana has transformed the packaging into a collection object. Today Fiasconaro represents the excellence of Made in Italy on the international scene, and the inauguration during the Columbus Week gives further symbolic value to the celebration of Italian heritage in America.
The opening ceremony, led by the Consul General of Italy Fabrizio Di Michele at 17:00, brought together an important audience. The Pasticcere Master Nicola Fiasconaro, awarded the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro by President Mattarella in 2020, arrived from Sicily with his brother Fausto, along with the third generation represented by Agata, to personally share with New York the 70 years of company history.
Among the illustrious guests, Whoopi Goldberg and the Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency, whose presence has assumed particular significance considering that the Fiasconaro panettone had already reached the space in 2007 with the astronaut Paolo Nespoli on board the NASA Space Shuttle Discovery, becoming probably the only product of artisan pastries to have reached the stars. “Today Luca Parmitano here in New York is a great honor. Sicily is a land that always rises, that emanates light, art and culture. With him we share a relationship of esteem and friendship — he often makes us a surprise coming to visit us in Castelbuono — and we share the pride of bringing to the world the beauty and the Italian talent” said Nicola Fiasconaro.
In the course of the evening, the New Yorkers were able to appreciate the mastery of Sicilian artisan pastry through an immersive tasting of signature panettoni, artisan spread creams and traditional desserts. At 19:00, the indie band of Brooklyn Beach Fossils accompanied the event with a DJ set, a particularly significant choice since the group was headliner of the 2024 Ypsigrock Festival in Castelbuono, thus creating an ideal bridge between the Sicilian medieval village and the creative energy of Manhattan.
The culinary experience was enriched by the gastronomic proposals of Chef Ugo Mattei of Prima Cucina Corp, expertly combined with the wines of Donnafugata, the renowned Sicilian winery, while guests discovered why the panettone represents the symbol of the Italian Christmas celebrations.
