Global Appetite for Taleggio PDO Prompts Record International Export Surge

Taleggio PDO has successfully consolidated its global market positioning, closing fiscal year 2025 with highly resilient production metrics and increasingly strategic foreign market penetration. According to the latest year-end financial and trade data released by the Protection Consortium, the premium Italian dairy segment continues to demonstrate strong macroeconomic health, effectively translating cultural heritage into universal commercial success.

Total annual production for Taleggio PDO cheese reached 8,722,371 kilograms in 2025. This steady volume underscores a highly stable and premium manufacturing supply chain. Monthly output peaked significantly in October 2025, with production nearing the one-million-kilogram milestone at 911,444 kg.

Export markets drive core growth

International trade has emerged as the primary growth engine for the Consortium over the past two-year cycle. By successfully navigating complex global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical shifts, Taleggio PDO has elevated its export volume to comprise approximately 27% of total annual production, equating to 2,348,054 kg routed to foreign markets.

The EU markets remain the bedrock of Taleggio’s international trade, absorbing 68.5% of total outbound shipments. France retained its status as the world’s leading importer of the product last year, purchasing roughly 496 tons in 2025 and reflecting a steady year-on-year growth rate of +6.4% compared to 2024. In the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, French imports reached 131,377 kg, a 3% increase over the 127,625 kg recorded in Q4 2024.

Germany secured the second position within the EU bloc, importing a total of 303 tons. Meanwhile, peripheral European markets exhibited high-growth momentum during the final quarter of 2025: Portugal registered a record-breaking +39% import spike compared to Q4 2024, and Luxembourg posted a solid quarterly gain of +16%.

Beyond the EU borders, the United States continues to anchor Taleggio PDO’s transatlantic expansion. Capturing over 332 tons in import volume, the US stands as the definitive benchmark market overseas, propelled by an accelerating consumer appetite for authentic, certified made in Italy commodities.

Commenting on the fiscal milestones, Lorenzo Sangiovanni, President of the Consortium, stated: “We are proud of the results achieved in 2025, which testify to the strength and versatility of Taleggio PDO in the global market. Our internationalization and innovation strategy continues to bear fruit, and we are ready for new challenges to consolidate our brand as a leader in the sector.”

Rejuvenating a traditional brand

Last year also marked a strategic pivot in the Consortium’s brand communication and consumer engagement corporate strategy. In a calculated effort to modernize the perception of a product traditionally viewed as conservative, the Consortium launched high-profile corporate partnerships aimed at integrating Taleggio PDO into contemporary pop culture and avant-garde culinary circles.

A key driver of this modernized brand positioning was the digital media partnership with renowned restaurateur and TV personality Joe Bastianich. The collaboration, crystallized in the digital format “TaleJoe,” highlighted the versatile and unconventional “rock” characteristics of the cheese, effectively capturing a younger, affluent, and cosmopolitan social media demographic. Furthermore, the Consortium expanded its culinary reach through avant-garde culinary events, showcasing unexpected recipes curated by chef Dalia Rivolta during the “Abbinamenti Audaci” (Bold Pairings) gala in September 2025.

This multifaceted promotional campaign culminated in a prime-time television placement on Sky’s MasterChef Italia. Featuring the product in high-stakes culinary challenges on the globally recognized cooking show provided a mass-market platform to demonstrate how heritage and culinary innovation can seamlessly coexist, strengthening Taleggio PDO’s brand equity domestically and abroad.
