Over time it has become a city tradition frequented by hundreds of families and curious, with a participation that often exceeds the capacity of the area destined for the event. Pumpkins are brought by the already carved participants and must comply with some precise rules: can not be too large or too small, or decorated with artificial materials or equipped with internal lights.
The initiative is accompanied by side activities designed for children and children, including craft workshops, readings by the New York Public Library and a parade of costumes animated by the giant puppets of the artist Anne Cubberly. The soundtrack is entrusted to the Nice Brass group, which will play live during the afternoon. The activities begin at 16:00 and continue until the ignition of the pumpkins, scheduled around 18:00.
The organizers recommend that participants register in advance online and withdraw their pumpkin at the end of the event at the Harlem Meer beach at the height of East 108th Street and Fifth Avenue. The event is part of the widest calendar of seasonal initiatives promoted by Central Park Conservancy, which every autumn offers outdoor activities to promote community participation and keep the public use of the park alive even in the coldest months.
