Over Half of Pasta di Gragnano PGI Sales Now Abroad

Pasta di Gragnano PGI cements global success with exports now driving more than half of the sector’s €400mn in annual sales. The figures place the most renowned Italian pasta as the tenth most valuable product among Italy’s PDO and PGI foods, and the second most important in the south of the country, according to data from Ismea-Qualivita. Output in 2024 surpassed 100,000 tonnes, with producers forecasting further growth in 2025.

The results were unveiled alongside the Festa della Pasta di Gragnano PGI, a three-day celebration featuring tastings, showcooking, and talks, held in partnership with a dozen other PDO and PGI Consortia. Massimo Menna, president of the Gragnano Pasta Consortium and chief executive of Pastificio Lucio Garofalo, said collaboration was key to growth: “We have already gone down this road and believe it to be fruitful. Pasta pairs with all of Italy’s typical products: it is a promotional route we want to pursue even more strongly abroad.”

Menna struck a cautiously upbeat note on wider economic challenges, citing tariffs and weak domestic consumption as headwinds. “Tariffs are undoubtedly damaging, but sentiment among companies for now seems to remain positive,” he said. While the US remains one of the leading markets outside the EU, he downplayed its exposure: “Pasta is not an expensive product, so we expect to limit the damage thanks to American consumers who are increasingly attentive to quality.”
