UN Carabinieri to strengthen cooperation on peace missions

This morning, at the United Nations Headquarters, institutional meetings were held between the General Commander of the Carabinieri, Gen. C.A. Salvatore Luongo, and the highest UN Authorities, as part of the US work visit and initiatives related to strengthening international cooperation in the field of Peace Operations.

During talks with the Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Mr. Atul Khare, and with the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Amb. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, themes of common interest have been addressed concerning the diversified contribution of the Carabinieri’s Army to international missions, specialist training and the development of operational capacities to support the United Nations.

Among the main points dealt with, the importance of further enhancing the high level of cooperation with the Centers of Excellence of the Arma was recalled.

Attention was devoted to environmental protection in peace operations. In this context, the project aims to strengthen the Sabaudia Centre as a centre of excellence for environmental protection, training and research, in line with the UN’s interest in the figure of Environmental Focal Points in international missions.

Further discussion focused on the activities of the Center for Excellence for the Police Units of Stability (CoESPU) and the prospects for enlargement of training cooperation with the United Nations, also through the certification of specialized courses for Formed Police Units and the willingness to host initiatives dedicated to updating training programmes. The CoESPU of Vicenza, in 20 years, has formed over 15,000 police officers from more than 130 nations. This perspective is part of Italy’s largest contribution to peacekeeping and Stability Policing.

On the same day a meeting was held with Mr. Darrin Jones, Executive Director Partnership and Planning of INTERPOL, during which the positive collaboration between the Carabinieri and the Organization was confirmed, with particular reference to the protection of cultural heritage, the fight against transnational crime and the promotion of legality in fragile or crisis contexts.

The meetings took place in a constructive climate and allowed to reaffirm the role of the Carabinieri Corps as a reference actor in the international scene of security, training and police cooperation, confirming the common will to continue in strengthening dialogue and joint initiatives.
